5 GPT Image 2 Cinematic Lighting Prompts
GPT Image 2 cinematic lighting prompts for soft side light, practicals, hard top light, window shadows and rain—plus 4 real outputs and a reusable formula.
I started this test with a narrow target: make an AI portrait feel lit, not merely dark. The first frame I kept was the ceramic artist below. One diffused source from camera-left, no frontal fill, a little clay dust on the hand. It looked like somebody had made a decision before pressing the shutter.
That is where most "cinematic" prompts go wrong. They pile on 8K, masterpiece, a camera body and three mood words, but never say where the light is. The result can be polished and still feel like a render.
For this guide I built five lighting recipes and ran four of them through GPT Image 2 at 1024×1536. The four images here are the untouched outputs, apart from JPEG compression for the page. More useful than the recipes, though, is the little lighting brief behind all five. Once you understand it, you can swap the subject without losing the mood.
The lighting brief I use before camera settings
I write the lighting paragraph in this order:
| Block | What to decide | Useful language |
|---|---|---|
| Source | What is making the light? | window, pendant, streetlamp, narrow spotlight |
| Position | Where is it relative to the camera and subject? | 45° camera-left, directly above, behind the subject on camera-right |
| Quality | How hard or soft are the transitions? | large diffused source, hard narrow beam, soft-edged shadow |
| Contrast | What happens on the unlit side? | open shadow, negative fill, readable silhouette |
| Color | Do the sources agree or fight? | warm practical against cool window light |
| Atmosphere | What makes the beam visible and the surface believable? | rain, haze, dust, skin texture, worn fabric |
Camera language comes after that. An 85mm portrait look is useful shorthand for framing and compression; f/1.8 suggests shallow focus. It is not an EXIF contract. OpenAI's own GPT Image prompting guide makes the same distinction: camera specs are interpreted loosely, while viewpoint, lighting, mood and explicit constraints are the controls you can rely on.
1. Soft side light for an intimate editorial portrait
Use this when you want a face to feel dimensional without looking dramatic for its own sake. The key phrase is open shadow: the far cheek gets darker, but it does not disappear.
Create a photorealistic editorial portrait of an original fictional
ceramic artist in a quiet studio.
Subject and scene:
Chest-up portrait, the artist wearing a plain charcoal linen shirt,
seated beside an unfinished clay vessel. Neutral plaster wall and a few
softly blurred shelves in the background. Natural skin texture, small
fabric creases, a trace of clay dust on one hand.
Lighting:
One large soft diffused light 45 degrees to camera-left and slightly
above eye level. Gentle falloff across the face, with the camera-right
cheek settling into open shadow rather than black. No frontal fill.
A faint warm practical glow deep in the background only.
Camera and composition:
85mm portrait look, eye-level, shallow depth of field, focus on the
nearer eye, subject placed just right of center with quiet negative
space on the left. Subtle fine film grain and restrained low-saturation
color grade.
Mood:
Intimate, observant, calm; a real editorial photograph rather than
glossy advertising.
Constraints:
No text, no logos, no trademarks, no watermark, no beauty retouching,
no plastic skin, no extra fingers.
The output kept pores, linen creases and the uneven clay surface. More importantly, the shadow side stayed readable. If this setup comes back too flat, do not add "more cinematic." Move the light farther to the side or add no frontal fill.
2. Warm practical light against a cool window
Two-color lighting works when each source has a believable job. Here the pendant lights the work; the rainy window separates the baker from the room. Asking for "teal and orange" would give the model a grade. Naming the sources gives it a scene.
Create a photorealistic cinematic still of an original fictional
night-shift baker closing a small neighborhood bakery.
Subject and scene:
Medium-wide frame. The baker stands behind a worn wooden counter, tying
a paper parcel. Flour dust, a cooling rack, and a half-empty chalkboard
frame are present, but the board contains no writing. Rain beads on the
front window.
Lighting:
A warm tungsten pendant above and slightly behind the baker creates a
soft amber pool on the counter. Cool blue street light enters through
the window from camera-left, outlining the shoulders and separating
the subject from the dark room. Let the two colors remain distinct;
do not neutralize the white balance. Shadows stay detailed.
Camera and composition:
35mm lens look, eye-level, subject in the lower-right third,
rain-streaked window and negative space on the left, shallow-to-medium
depth of field, slight halation around practical lights, restrained
film grain.
Mood:
Quiet after-hours concentration, lived-in rather than staged.
Constraints:
No readable text, no logos, no trademarks, no watermark, no polished
chain-store styling, no excessive teal-orange grading.
Notice that the blue is strongest at the window and on the rim of the subject, not painted over the entire frame. The instruction let the two colors remain distinct did more work than any color-palette adjective.
3. Hard top light for a dark product still life
Hard light is not automatically cheap. It looks cheap when every surface is equally exposed. For a moody still life, I ask for one precise pool, then spend one sentence protecting the important material detail.
Create a photorealistic fine-art product still life for an original
unbranded cedar-and-resin fragrance.
Subject and scene:
A small unlabeled amber glass bottle, a rough cedar offcut, and one
curl of pale smoke on a matte dark stone surface. Deep low-saturation
olive-black studio background. The objects should feel tactile and
imperfect, with tiny dust particles and realistic glass reflections.
Lighting:
One narrow hard light directly above and slightly camera-left, creating
a precise pool of light, sharp-edged shadows, and a bright rim on the
glass shoulder. Add a very weak warm bounce from below so the resin
liquid remains visible. Keep most of the frame dark.
Camera and composition:
100mm macro look, vertical 2:3 frame, bottle in the lower center, smoke
rising into generous negative space, sharp focus on the glass edge and
cedar grain, background falling smoothly out of focus.
Mood:
Ritualistic, quiet, mysterious, premium without looking like a catalog
render.
Constraints:
No label, no text, no logos, no trademarks, no watermark, no gold foil,
no floating product, no synthetic 3D-render look.
The weak bounce matters. Without it, an amber bottle in a dark setup often becomes a black cutout. The bounce keeps the liquid visible without filling the rest of the scene.
4. Window-shadow bands without the stock-photo look
This is the setup I use for a graphic editorial frame. Broad shadow bands create structure, but the prompt keeps them off the eyes so the face does not become a lighting demo.
Create a photorealistic editorial portrait of an original fictional
florist standing at a worktable in a quiet back room.
Subject and scene:
Waist-up frame. Plain oatmeal work shirt, loose stems and brown paper on
the table, textured limewash wall behind. The subject is looking down
while trimming one leaf. Natural skin and fabric texture; nothing posed
for the camera.
Lighting:
Late-afternoon sun enters through wide window blinds from camera-right,
casting two broad, soft-edged diagonal bands across the wall and the
subject's torso. Keep both eyes in clean, soft light. Use negative fill
on camera-left for a deep but readable shadow side. A few dust particles
are visible only inside the sunbeam.
Camera and composition:
50mm lens look, eye-level, subject left of center, worktable leading
into the frame, medium depth of field, warm neutral grade, subtle film
grain.
Mood:
Quiet concentration, late-day stillness, contemporary editorial
photography.
Constraints:
No text, no logos, no trademarks, no watermark, no striped shadows
across the eyes, no beauty retouching, no decorative flower-shop sign.If the bands become thin zebra stripes, change wide window blinds to one architectural opening and ask for a single shadow edge. The lighting idea stays intact; only the geometry changes.
5. Rainy backlight with a readable face
Rain gives a backlight something to catch. The usual failure is a perfect silhouette with no human detail, so this prompt assigns a second, dimmer source to the face and says exactly what it must preserve.
Create a photorealistic cinematic street portrait of an original
fictional bicycle courier pausing under a concrete awning at night.
Subject and scene:
Three-quarter portrait with the courier looking down while tightening
one glove. Plain dark rain jacket with no branding. Wet pavement, soft
traffic bokeh, visible rain, and a modest city street with no readable
signs.
Lighting:
Strong white backlight from a streetlamp behind the subject on
camera-left catches the rain and draws a thin rim along the jacket and
hair. A dim greenish
fluorescent fixture under the awning provides soft top-front exposure
on the face. Add a faint warm reflection from wet pavement; keep the
face readable without flattening the silhouette.
Camera and composition:
50mm lens look, eye-level, subject left of center, dark negative space
to the right, shallow depth of field, realistic motion blur on a few
rain streaks, subtle high-ISO grain, natural contrast.
Mood:
Tired but composed; a believable frame from a quiet urban drama.
Constraints:
No readable text, no logos, no trademarks, no watermark, no superhero
styling, no extreme teal-orange color grade.
The backlight gives the rain and jacket edges their shape; the ugly little fluorescent tube does the practical work of keeping the face. That mismatch is why the frame feels observed rather than staged.
My three-step workflow for adapting any of these
- Lock the scene before the mood. Start in the GPT Image 2 generator with the subject, framing and one light source. If the composition is wrong, fix it before adding rain, haze or a second color.
- Change one lighting variable at a time. Use image editing for instructions such as
move the soft source from camera-left to camera-right; preserve subject, pose, framing, wardrobe and background. Small edits make cause and effect visible. - Run the commercial check. Look at hands, readable signs, invented marks on clothing, product labels and any area where a real trademark could slip in. Then choose the final crop. The API supports flexible sizes; in the site's text-to-image studio, pick the closest aspect ratio before generating so the composition is built for the frame.
The Bottom Line
The quickest way out of the plastic AI look is not another style adjective. It is the same thing that made the ceramic-artist frame work: a physical source, a position, a falloff and a job—plus a clear instruction about what must stay visible.
Copy one of the five prompts, replace the subject, and keep the lighting paragraph intact for the first run. If the image still feels generic, delete adjectives before adding them. A precise sentence about where the shadow lands is worth more than a page of "cinematic."
